With increasing demands for environmentally friendly production, high electricity prices and lack of professional support, the need for cooperation in the greenhouse industry has become apparent. Through the innovation network, challenges are set in the system — and manufacturers are connected more closely.
The story
The reason for the network is that greenhouse producers face many of the same challenges: unpredictable electricity prices, need for environmentally friendly solutions, lack of resources and little market power. At the same time, pressures on food security and self-sufficiency are increasing, and the structure of the industry is changing -- the big ones are getting bigger, while small producers are dropping out. Many gardeners are approaching retirement, and there is a need to find new solutions together. The horticulture profession is complex, requiring insight into everything from biology and technology to economics and HR. As of today, high school is the highest formal education for many gardeners.
Road selection and development
The network has addressed the need for better overview, professional support and cross-linking. Together with the producers, several projects have been established, and conducted workshops and company visits to identify challenges and share experiences. A separate initiative — “The Next Generation of Greenhouse Producers” — has been established to strengthen recruitment to the industry. Joint projects, such as the development of climate-neutral greenhouse production, are also being worked on in collaboration with NIBIO, GPS and NGF.

Fjellam from Ryfylke has been awarded Protected Geographical Indication, which is a recognition that testifies to high quality, strong traditions and close connection to Ryfylke's mountain pastures.
The story
Fjellam from Ryfylke is based on long traditions and good cooperation between sheep farmers in the mountainous areas from Røldal to Sirdal. With a focus on animal welfare, sustainability and unique grazing areas, the producers have laid the foundation for a product with a clear identity and high quality. The recognition came in 2024, when Fjellam from Ryfylke was awarded Protected Geographical Indication — a quality scheme that places strict requirements on origin and production methods.
Road selection and development
To enhance visibility and value creation, manufacturers have taken several steps in recent years — with the support of TEAL. The work has included everything from strategies for the exploitation of the whole animal and sales towards new customer segments, to updating marketing materials and participation in trade fairs. Dialogue with players such as Prima, Nortura and A. Idsøe has also been facilitated, and a clearer commercial approach to sales and marketing work has been developed. The focus going forward is increased profitability for producers, strengthened market position and further processing.
